The CITB Health, Safety, and Environment (HS&E) test is a nationally recognised assessment that demonstrates a worker's understanding of essential site safety principles. It is required by many employers and is often a prerequisite for card schemes and site access.
The HS&E test helps ensure workers understand legal responsibilities, health and welfare issues, general safety, high-risk activities and environmental protection on construction sites. Below you will find the test structure, the different types of HS&E tests, and links to book or prepare for the test.
If you already know which test you need, you can book the CITB HS&E Test online.

There are three test types designed for different roles:
The Operatives test confirms a basic level of site safety awareness. It is suitable for general construction workers whose role does not require specialist knowledge.
The Specialists test covers the five core areas plus specialist topics relevant to a chosen field (e.g., Demolition, Tunnelling, Plumbing, HVACR variants). Choose the specialist that matches your trade.
Managers & Professionals includes management topics such as CDM regulations, demolition considerations and highway works responsibilities. This test is aimed at supervisory or managerial roles.
